SHC Stunned; Vandals Still At Large

By Hannah Hassle-Hoffman

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA-- The Schreyer Honors College has long had a reputation for bringing recognition to Penn State for distinguished achievement. In light of a recent vandalism incident, however, the College has been under attack as the integrity of some of its students has been in question.

The vandalism came in the form of an explicit poster hung in the lobby of the honors dormitory late last month. "The vandalism was especially devastating, " said Dr. Jocelyn Autobia, coordinator of the Honors College, "because it took place on the day of our largest offer session of the year and went unnoticed for almost the entire day due to the subtle nature of the offense"

Eddie Hatt, a resident of the honors dorm, said the poster had the pretense of promoting school spirit. "[the vandalized poster] said, 'Go PSU basketball' on it and had a lion jumping in the air. It wasn't until much later that I noticed one of the legs bore a strong resemblance to a... part of the male anatomy."

The Honors College holds several offer sessions a year whereby students can come tour Penn State, and the Honors College in particular. On the last offer session held in March, some students and parents got more than they bargained for.

Rebecca Ryan, a prospective student, saw the poster first hand. "I came here with my Grandmother to tour the school," explained Ryan. "We even took a picture in front of the poster. Thank goodness my Nana has poor eyesight!"

Autobia discovered the poster late during the offer session. "We had been pointing out the poster on our tour because we thought it embodied the strength of our school spirit. It got chuckles every time we went past, and now I know why."

Autobia estimates about 200 students and parents were affected. "When I finally noticed the male genitalia superimposed on the poster, I became quite upset and had it...the poster that is...removed immediately,"

Ann Marie Miniman, a student living in the honors dorm, said, "I was glad to see that the Honors students were finally taking interest in something recreational, but this is not what I had in mind. I hope the vandals are found, and found soon."

The Honors College is taking this breach of judgment very seriously. Autobia explained, "We plan to take away access to a few study lounges as punishment until the vandals come forward. This incident is a real embarrassment to the College."

Honors College officials are not the only ones getting involved in the incident. State Representative John Lawless has also become interested in the publicity. "In the wake of the Sex Faire, this stunt only further proves that Penn State students, even the Honors students, are disrespectful to the common standards of morality." Lawless plans to take news of the incident to the State Capitol.

Autobia has confiscated the poster, and it remains in her office as the investigation continues. "I just look at the poster all day ad wonder where we went wrong."
