Penn State Students Jump on the Bandwagon

By Winnie Fooslager

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA-- As the final seconds ticked down in Sunday's University of North Carolina versus Penn State game, some would have thought that they were watching a football game as Penn State did the seemingly impossible, defeating perennial basketball powerhouse North Carolina on the hard wood courts.

: Penn State head coach Jerry Dunn commented on Sunday's victory, "I wish to thank all the fans who are now supporting the team. I mean sure you all wanted to fire me a few months ago, but I hold no grudges.

With the surprising victory, the student body rejoiced and collectively leaped onto the Penn State Final Four bandwagon. According to a student pulse survey prior to this victory 1 % of the student body classified themselves as being a Penn State basketball fan. However, in a survey conducted last night the number of fans has reached an astronomical 98% who support the team.

"Hopefully, I'll be able to go to my classes now without getting booed by my classmates" said senior guard Joe Crispin "I mean sure we didn't have the best team for the past five years, but now look at us.

Penn State "fair weather" fan Denise Riley (senior--communications) stated, "I've been following the team for years. My favorite player is that black guy with the tattoo and number 7 or wait is that guy number 5? PSU basketball is number 1!"

At the Penn State Bookstore, there has seen a sudden demand for Penn State Basketball jerseys. Unfortunately, the Bookstore has not stocked a Penn State Men's Basketball Jersey for 11 years now.

"I came in looking for my favorite player's jersey Gynasini Clinton-Hearst, but they didn't have any jerseys. Maybe I'll just take my Rashard Casey jersey and change the number on it."

The fortunes for the Penn State team seem to have turned around mid-season after an announcement by the Penn State Athletic department about the existence of the basketball team .

"That was a big hurdle to overcome," said senior forward Titus Ivory, "Once the other teams knew Penn State had a basketball team our confidence as a team grew."

Penn State, which beat Providence 69-59 in the first round, will play 11th-seeded Temple on Friday night. The Nittany Lions beat Temple 66-60 this season in a game at the Bryce Jordan Center attended by 14 students. Now it seems PSU students can use the five day delay to try to at least know a few of the player's names.
