Penn State Students Jump Off The Band Wagon

By Jane Sorbitol

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA-- As quickly as it began it was over. The sudden euphoria that swept the Penn State University campus of their first sweet 16 appearance since 1954 crashed to a halt after an 84 – 72 loss at the hands of Temple Friday night.

With the defeat, the seemingly “die hard” fans of Penn State basketball, suddenly denounced the team that they had so dearly loved only a week before.

Police use force to try to maintain order after Friday night’s loss to Temple, which saw the teams fan base shrink from more than 20,000 to it’s usual 3 students.

“PSU basketball sucks,” shouted Tim Reichtag (senior—Communications) at a riot in Beaver Canyon following the defeat as he removed his Joe Crispin jersey that he bought two days before and threw it to the asphalt below.”

Similar sentiments were echoed at the Penn State University during the entire weekend.

Over at the BJC where a few thousand people had gathered to watch the game on the TV screen, chants of We are…. Penn Shit” were heard to replace the normal rally cry of “We are…. Penn State.”

PSU student Kelli Bobeck (junior - civil engineering) stated, “What do you mean? I never liked PSU basketball in the first place. I’m a big fan of Temple, that’s why I came here to watch the game.”

At the PSU bookstore, Penn State Basketball Jersey which they had just ordered this past week were now on clearance and 90% off.

State College resident Donna Martin had second thoughts about buying a block of four season tickets for next year’s home games.

“I’d admit, I liked Penn State basketball for about five days because I thought they were going to be good, but let’s face it I’m stuck with four tickets to every home game next year. Maybe I jumped the gun a little.”

Penn State basketball will continue next year with the teams first game scheduled for January 8th at Ohio State.
